An earth pigment, one of the oldest pigments. Green earth, also called terre verte, is a weathering product of various minerals. Green earth is known by several names, depending on where it is found, such as: Cypriot earth, Tyrolean earth, Bohemian earth or Veronese earth. The color of the earth is highly variable and is also quite transparent. Was used in antiquity and in Roman frescoes. In the Middle Ages it was mainly used as a shadow color in underpaintings of the skin in portraits. (Verdaccio)
