The original Ultramarine is Lapis Lazuli, a mountain crystal from Afghanistan that, due to its scarce occurrence, was already as precious as gold in ancient times. In 1828 they succeeded in making an artificial Lapis Lazuli. This pigment was named after the former transport route of Lapis Lazuli: 'Ultra Mare' (coming from across the sea)
