Cobalt Violet was the first true violet pigment, prepared in 1859. However, its high cost and low coloring power prevented its wider use in painting and it was often replaced by the cleaner and more economical, but less brilliant Manganese Violet. Haarlemmer Olieverf therefore still carries two variants, namely Cobalt Violet light and Cobalt Violet dark.
